While many people believe pink to be the traditional color for girls and blue the choice for boys, it was not always that way: in 18th century America, silver was a popular color for both sexes. In fact, baby boys and girls were typically dressed alike, a practice which only changed in the 20th century.

When pink and blue did emerge as popular gift colors around this time, it was actually for reverse sexes: a 1918 article in the Ladies' Home Journal asserted that: "The generally accepted rule is pink for the boys, and blue for the girls. Other sources concurred, and it was only in the 1940s that we get the familiar color-gender match we all know.
